Book Review: Song Quest by Katherine Roberts

Song Quest by Katherine Roberts
A very satisfying plain popcorn, almost a sweet and salty mix.

An original story idea, and multiple view points made this story a very interesting read. It is based off a parallel world to ours, where there are Half Creatures, people who can work magic by singing, and poachers galore. The story weaves around two main characters: Kherron and Rialle, who are both Singers in training. This means that by singing or humming five different tunes (Challa, Kashe, Shi, Aushan and Yhen) they can affect peoples' emotions, from making them laugh, to scaring them, to even making them cry. They travel the world protecting Half Creatures, and keeping the peace between the hostile countries.

In this book, Rialle, a young Singer, is called out on a mission, to stop the mysterious attacks on the water creatures, but it takes her a lot further than just catching criminals. Her story is beautifully linked with Kherron, another Singer, who betrayed the Singer Academy to go travel the world. There is very little violence, and no overly-kissy scenes, so it seems like a good book to read. However, I got the impression that it wasn't written very well, (or at least aimed at a younger age-group). It didn't have the flowing, descriptive style that I enjoy, while reading well-written books.

Popcorn Rating
This book was very difficult to rate. Whilst it had a great plot, and original ideas, it didn't give me the can't-put-this-book-down feeling. I will have to stick with three and a half stars mark, (very nearly a four star), but I would recommend it to anyone within the 11-13 age group.
