Dr Strange (12a)

A thrilling journey exploring time and sorcery. Suitable for ages twelve and above (12a rating), but with several close ups of wounds or operations. A mild swearword is employed here and there.

Yes, another marvel film, I know. I've given up counting at this point, what with the avengers series, guardians of the galaxies, agents of shield... you get my point. However, this film was a breath of fresh air in the heavy marvel franchise.

It follows the story of Dr. Strange, (Benedict Cumberbatch) a brilliant surgeon with ego problems. After a devastating car accident, his hands, the most crucial tool for a doctor, are ruined. Due to the fact he can't even hold a pen, he is fired from his job and descends into a state of depression. He's so desperate to be able to work again, he's willing to try anything, including journeying far into the mountains in search of a mystical healer. But he gets much more than he bargained for, and is roped into a world of time bending, magic wielding and generally fighting the forces of evil.

I won't say any more, for risk of spoiling it, but in a nutshell, this film certainly lived up to expectations. The special effects were the best I've seen yet, crazy to the point of making you dizzy. Whole streets were rolled up like paper, towns were folded in on each other, and your point of view was flipped inside out.

I also approve of the individuality of Doctor Strange. Played by Cumberbatch doing an excellent American accent, Strange was egotistical and arrogant. It was refreshing to have a “human” hero, complete with flaws and issues, rather than a perfect peter saving the day again.

However, I did have several issues with the movie. Firstly, I felt the villain (Mads Mikkelsen) was too stereotypical. He was your classic bad guy, with virtually no depth of character. I felt considering Marvel has such a big following, they could have dared to think outside the box a little. Secondly, I and my fellow movie go-ers felt that the ending was a little slow. Perhaps they could have wrapped it up a little faster?

Stan Lee, the creator of the Marvel Universe, appears in every movie.

Aside from those points, this film was stunning. I'd advise you to see it as soon as you can! (Tip: Look out for the “Stan Lee” cameo and the two bonus scenes at the end. They’re well worth the wait!)
