Book Review: Night Break by Andrew Lane

Night Break by Andrew Lane
A brief synopsis
As a fan of the Young Sherlock series, I was expecting another well developed mystery, with evil arch villains and a twisting plot. But, unfortunately, this book was a disappointment. It had a simple, guessable story line, with no hidden baddies or concealed lies. As for the mystery, well, it just didn't exist.

WARNING! READ ON FOR SPOILERS!

One of the reasons it was so empty was because of the lack of love interest, and the severing of family ties. After being kidnapped to China, Virginia (his does-he-love-her interesting girlfriend), gave up on him, and settled with another man, leaving Sherlock empty. He only has his brother to rely upon, and then, due to a understated betrayal, he looses him too.

Also, in any mystery novel, the story builds to a cresendo, with a dramatic reveal of a villain you never suspected, but in Night Break, I wasn't even aware of the build up, until an unknown baddie popped up on stage and then proceeded to fall in some oil and die.

Sherlock has raced around the world; to Russia, China, America, France, Ireland, and many others, making each story a spectacular adventure into unknown grounds, but Lane was just pushing it too far, when Sherlock went to Egypt. It felt like Lane was scrabbling around trying to think of a plot to go with the whole Egypt idea, and it made the story seem flat and badly thought out.

So, whilst I'd recommend the Young Sherlock series wholeheartedly, I would advise you to steer clear of this book, as it just isn't worth the time spent reading it.
